Elite runners train differently in two ways

When Eliud Kipchoge broke the 2:00 hour marathon, smashing his own world record and running 4 minutes faster than the next fastest human in history, he said that his training hadn't changed.

 

It was his mind that had changed.

They train their muscles (not their heart and lungs) for the specific demands that they will experience on race day. Period.

But what about VO2max and lactate threshold workouts? I thought we had to do those to get better

When you're running a marathon, you're only at 80% of your VO2max...and only 90-95% of your lactate threshold.

 

If those were the things that limited your performance, they'd be maxed out! But they're not.

 

Something is surely getting maxed out when you run as hard as you can, and it's not your heart and lungs...it's your muscles!

thought that training more would make me better, but I ended up injured, and never at the level that I knew I could be at.

Hi, I'm Andrew.

 

When I started running 24 years ago, I wasn't anything special. Seriously, I was a really slow runner. I'm not saying that to boast about 'look how far I've come', I'm saying it because I really was below average.

 

In high school, I was 121 out of 123 in my cross country season.

 

I was dead last in every single 1 mile and 2 mile race that I did, getting lapped by the winners frequently.  I was not a fast runner.

 

But I kept going because I loved running!

 

  • Eventually I qualified for Boston, and ran under 3:00 hours in the marathon

  • I went on to run 100 miles in the mountains and felt great doing it...smiling the whole way

  • The next year, I ran a 50 mile trail race in a time that was good enough to rank 108th in North America (7:31:00)

But here's the crazy part...

  • I trained less for my sub-3 marathon than I did for 3:06, 3:10, and slower... 

  • I trained even less for the 100 mile mountain race than I did for the marathon...

  • and even less for the 50 miler race which ranked me 108th in North America.
